Natural plague foci in Russia

Plague circulates naturally in wild rodents and their fleas in certain landscapes. Animal outbreaks in these foci are a normal part of surveillance and are not the same as human cases.

A March 2026 review in Problems of Particularly Dangerous Infections (Popov et al.) found plague-infected animals in three of 11 natural foci in Russia. The full list of the 11 foci still needs to be imported from that paper.
